The idea was simple. Do a triathlon around Wales starting and ending on the north coast in Prestatyn, where the Offers Dyke path ends (or starts). I swam 16km towards Colwyn Bay which took me 3 days due to poor conditions and unfavourable tides but I found the swim enjoyable and it reminded me of Swimming Britain again. It's been long enough now for me to have forgotten all the bad bits about that adventure and not gag at the taste of salt water.
I then got on the bike and cycled and camped and lived in services stations for 5 days as I followed the coast all the way around to Chepstow. It was a very hilly route and I could have done with carrying less gear on the bike. Of the three disciplines I was least happy with my cycling performance and noted to concentrate a little bit more on my strength work when I got home.
The run from Chepstow was going to loosely follow the Offas Dyke path but mainly I was going to explore where ever the trails took me (as long as it was north) I was running 55km each day carrying my camping kit while sleeping rough. I loved it and was very happy that I could manage those sorts of distances consecutively without causing myself and injury.
So all in all the triathlon did exactly what it was meant to do, helped me get back on the horse and get fit and strong again in preparation for the next big thing.
