The riding is hard. On day two you'll climb 1,560 metres from Didgori to Tsalka. Later you'll ride high along Paravani Lake, past the old Poka Monastery, under big open skies. Day four is the longest at 91 kilometres, dropping through volcanic land to the Vardzia cave monastery, carved into a cliff face back in the 12th century. We'll stop at Khertvisi Fortress on the way. We'll eat packed lunches on the road and dinners in family guesthouses.

We ride hard. One day climbs over 1,200 metres through a volcanic range once used by caravans crossing the Sahara. Another drops us into the Roses Valley, past Mount M'Goun, Morocco's second-highest peak. We roll through canyons and dry riverbeds. We pass nomads still living in caves and in goat-hair tents. On day five we stop to make tea with a Berber family and share it in the shade.
