It's with great frustration that I have had to end the American leg of my journey 350 miles short here in Phoenix. The reality is that I was meant to be in Australia over a week ago and with my fractured spine playing up I can't get to LA in time for my flight and delaying it even further has a huge knock-on effect for the rest of the trip. Even at this rate I might miss my flight out of Australia. It's been such a hard decision as I always wanted to cycle coast to coast. At least I got to conquer The Rocky's. (Well they conquered me actually) and I would rather make up the miles in more interesting countries than The US anyway.
The US has been really emotional with my crash, then receiving incredible generosity from a wonderful family and then getting back on the bike trying to get back to race pace again. Since the crash my average has dropped to around 160 miles per day. I know that sounds a lot but it's nowhere near the 200 I was able to do before. Even sitting here on the computer hurts my spine. A minute doesn't go by each day where I wish I had woken up 5 minutes later on the day of the crash. It's been a tough one but hopefully I will recover soon.
Thanks for all the support. Next stop Australia.
